The Big Reveal

Welcome to the Big Reveal
I enjoy reading author interviews, but often times they don’t ask the kinds of questions I wonder about. So I’ve assembled a group of writers at all levels, from un-agented to published, and every week I will have a new question for them.

Where do you usually write?

Dahlia Adler, Agented Author
These days, I write almost universally at my desk at home. It’s my ideal place to be, once you put some snacks and water next to me and turn on some sort of music. Honestly, I wish I were the type that was flexible enough to curl up in a cafe and really get things done – I’d love to say “This book was written entirely over copious amounts of hot chocolate at my favorite little place in Jerusalem” – but now that I’ve gone from laptop to desktop, I don’t think there’s any other place I could do this!

I usually write either at my desk on my lunch break or at my computer at home. It used to be in the living room but recently has been moved to its own room. WOOHOO! I like quiet when I’m really plotting while writing. But if I’m writing an emotional scene I like music. And I always want music when I’m editing. Dream place to write would be with a laptop on location. LOL. Wherever my book takes place. Maybe in London.

Lynne Schmidt, Un-Agented Author
Ideal setting has a lovely soundtrack (maybe a nice playlist), a cup of tea, and my dog. Beyond that, I can write anywhere. I prefer a chair with a leg rest though, because my arthritic knees cause me discomfort after about..ten minutes. I move around a lot.

Theresa Paulo, Agented Author
Lately I write whenever I can. My new job has really put a damper on my writing schedule. So now I tend to write at night with a glass of wine. My ideal writing time would be mid morning with a nice hot cup of tea, at my desk, VH1 music video countdown in the background. I’m easy. I think if I was at a cafe in Paris I’d be too busy taking in my surroundings and unable to concentrate.

Mindi Scott, Published Author
I usually write at my desktop computer in my home office. I like to have music playing quietly in the background. As boring as it sounds, that’s my ideal writing spot. I can scribble down rough scenes at the beach or wherever, but the real magic only happens at home.

Steph Campbell, Published Author
I usually write super late at night, once my litter of children has gone to bed. I drink a lot of Sugar-Free Red Bull to stay awake and get some work done.

Christa Desir, Pre-Published Author
I used to write at the library, but then we got a dog. I have this beautiful writing desk that I never sit at because my needy puppy doesn’t want me to leave him and he’s only allowed in the kitchen or the backyard. So I do everything from the kitchen now, but hope one day I’ll get back to my writing desk!

  1. I write at my desktop in our computer room about 75% of the time. The rest is on the laptop, wherever it’s quiet.

I like sitting in coffee shops, but I don’t having to pay $4 for a drink, so I don’t do that as often.

  2. Jeez,

    What an interesting question… geez… :)~

(By the way… I think you are right about “geez” however, I think we are cool using “jeez.”

    So there 🙂

Ps. Oh, nearly forgot… I’m on the kitchen table, too… small kids need quick reaction time 🙂

  3. Interesting! I write in my living room on my laptop, and sometimes I’ll take it over to the couch, especially if my children want my presence. They don’t care if I’m preoccupied writing – they just want me around. I kind of like that!
