A to Z – Poltergeist

April 18, 2013 by Suzi

Last October after watching all the movies on TV before Halloween, I got the idea to do an A to Z on horror movies. I also have a story premise in the back of my head involving horror movies, so this fits into my research for that. So I’m going to talk about random horror movies.
First, I am no film critic, just a person who likes horror movies. And second, some of the posts may contain spoilers. So you have been warned.
Poltergeist (1982)
IMDb Summary: A family’s home is haunted by a host of ghosts.
Cheese factor: Medium
Gore factor: Low
Creep factor: Medium
Could it happen? Naw
Poltergeist is another classic, and although I remember bits and pieces of different sequels, I didn’t remember much from the original. One of my impressions of this movie, before viewing it recently, was that it’s a fairly clean movie. And after watching it, I don’t think it qualifies for the R-rating it has. PG-13 maybe, but not R.
The one thing I got a kick out of was the parents smoking pot in their bedroom at night, the mom even getting a little goofy. Considering that they were a ‘respectable’ family, I can’t see that happening in today’s mainstream movies.
Another scene that gave me a laugh. The couple is building a pool in their backyard. And the mom is worried that their sleep-walking daughter might fall into the hole being dug. You know, the 4′ hole carved out of the earth. Apparently, she is not worried about her sleep-walking daughter falling into the pool and drowning, because that never came up.
Ahhh. The eighties. When we didn’t have to wear seatbelts. Or bike helmets. Or put fences around our pools. Or get to sit on our ass while flipping through our eight TV channels. (Cause you had to use the dial.) :)

The gore factor is low, but the gross factor was high. Maggots. Rotting flesh. Ghostly slime. So it had a higher Eww factor, but no gore.
It’s a decent movie, and I’d definitely recommend it. Have you seen it or any of the sequels?

Other P movies I recommend: Psycho, of course, Pet Semetary: A Stephen King favorite, People Under the Stairs: creepy house, creepy couple, naughty kids banished to the basement

  1. I saw Poltergeist when I was probably too young to see it. That scene with the tree scared me to death. And both Psycho and Pet Semetery are awesome. :)

Oh my yes, this brings back memories…

  3. I saw this one for the first time a couple years ago. What counted for an R rating in ’82 wouldn’t now.

  4. This movie terrified me when I was a child (yeah older siblings watched it with me around). I’m not sure if it’s this one or one of the sequels, but isn’t there a part where the kid’s brushing his teeth and gets attacked by his braces? This and Gremlins–sooo scary to my 5 y/o self!!!

I don’t think they had PG-13 when they made this movie, did they?
I forgot all about the parents smoking pot. They showed this last night and I was talking about it with my husband and about the coffins in the swimming pool and how that was weird because the basement would have been deeper than six feet and digging for the pool would probably too. I guess I didn’t remember the pool being only 4 feet. But, still… the basement.

  6. Ooooh, I saw this one! I have the maggot scene in my head now! (bleah)

  7. AJ says:

Classic! I saw this movie when I was.. perhaps a little too young to see it. Good stuff. :)

    Congrats on finishing week 3!
